Such GPUs were needed in massive quantities! Their export was even banned to China because they were considered a strategically important product.
🇨🇳Now, the Chinese have demonstrated that they can train AI using regular "consumer-grade" GPUs. They created a chatbot for next to nothing, and it has already outperformed chatbots currently in development that have had tens of millions poured into them.
The industry was built on the idea that AI is insanely expensive, but the Chinese managed to create AI in a garage.
There’s also speculation that the DeepSeek team smuggled 50,000 H100 GPUs from Singapore 🤔
